WOW – A celebration of the Music, Lyrics & Dance of Kate Bush, Gig Review. Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

Originally published by L.S. Media. April 13th 2012.

L.S. Media Rating ****

Above all else, Kate Bush’s music has endured beyond recognised boundaries as she releases albums that not only stand the test of time over and over again but also have sold phenomenally without any assistance that touring would bring.

There may have been the odd one or two in the audience, hardly believing their luck, that would have been in the audience the only time Kate Bush actually played in Liverpool and they would have been the only ones to be there over 30 years later from that date to hear the sensational talent of Maaike Breijman go through two sets of the most sensual, inspiring and classic music from one of the queens of British popular music.

To say Howard Jones is a consummate professional would be something of an understatement. Even though he appears to be one of the most laid back men to ever play to a packed o2 Academy Liverpool crowd, don’t let the easy going nature fool you. This is a model musician who wants his night to be as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists. Film Review.

So the truth is out, Queen Victoria was a lover of fine dining of exotic endangered animals including panda bear. Charles Darwin looked suspiciously related to his manpanzee Mr. Bobo and pirates are just as nice and thoughtful, well-spoken people who plunder their way across the high seas only because there is a shiny trophy at the end of the year. At least this is how it works in the utterly absorbing world of Aardman Animations and the world of stop-motion film.

Cast: Sam Worthington, Rosamund Pike, Bill Nighy, Edgar Ramirez, Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson, Danny Huston.

Wrath of the Titans brings back the idea of the big screen epic that the Lord of the Rings franchise enjoyed much deserved success with and with a cast list that some Hollywood and British directors would pawn the family silver to have appeared in their film.

For those that may have worried about the future of the band The Floe when the foursome went their separate ways, don’t worry, the two remaining members of the harmonious group, Sarah Springett and Liz Townsend, have regrouped, re-energised and gone back into the studio to record a stunning and sensual new E.P. The aptly named Simple Pleasures captures the two talented women at their very best and at their most dedicated.

When Matt Breen walked on stage at the Cavern Pub in 2011, armed with only a guitar, cracking lyrics and an attitude that you sometimes think is missing from new bands today; it wasn’t a stretch of the imagination to think of this young man, not even 17 at the time, and his excellent group The Endings, going further and better than is normally possible for a band so young.

Back to back renditions of classic albums can surely not be a bad thing to witness. When the albums are re-created in the full pomp and ceremony by Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson, then you know a night at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall listening to Thick as a Brick and its 2012 sequel Thick as a Brick 2 will be inspired and somewhat beautiful.

Barnaby Edwards’s latest story for Big Finish, The Emerald Tiger sees the classic fifth doctor, played by the seemingly ever youthful Peter Davison, continuing his adventures with the iconic team of Tegan, Vislor Turlough and Nyssa.

Feeder, Generation Freakshow. Album Review.

Originally published by L.S. Media. April 23rd 2012.

L.S. Media Rating *****

The lyrics to the title track of the album Generation Freakshow sums up the new release by Feeder perfectly. Listen very carefully and it becomes more than a chant of denial from a lost generation and those that have led the way like a pied piper playing tunes that betray them and will lead them not to a salvation but to a despondency that is palpable throughout this incredible album.

L.S. Media Rating ****

Feeder had only released their new album, Generation Freakshow, the day before but looking around the extremely packed out Parr Hall in Warrington, it was impossible to see any fan that hadn’t already learned the vast majority of the words to the new songs in time for the band’s appearance on stage.
