There was a time when teachers would look upon their pupil’s reading habits and consciously judge them accordingly, no matter how interested in the source material, the children’s ability to report on what they had read and the lessons learned from the text, the snobbery and direct condescension placed at the student’s desk as they admitted to reading comic books whilst their peers and friends got praise for having spent their weekend with their noses pretending to have insight into the world of ‘serious’ literature was short sighted and demeaning.

There is always something reassuringly honest about Doctor Who when it finds itself within the past, a story that explains, even in the smallest detail or nugget of information, how history has been seen across the ages, how the unfolding of time is not that different after all from what we believe, or even how wildly inaccurate our modern day of thinking is and how biased it can be when we only use modern devices instead of books to check our facts.

The Tractate Middoth, Television Review.

At one time even just the name of English writer M.R. James was enough to send readers and viewers alike scuttling into the dark recess of their mind. The master of the supernatural had an uncanny way of capturing base fears and turning them into works of true genius. A true genius which in some ways has not been surpasses more than a hundred years after his first written ghost story.

It really will be a shame for lovers of Poirot when this particular series comes to an end. The only way that they will get their fix will be to watch all the episodes on back to back repeat. Not such a hard problem to get round it seems but there will certainly be no new episodes recorded starring the irreplaceable David Suchet as the consummate Belgian.

To some, the very name Roald Dahl invokes memories of hiding behind the sofa and watching through the gaps of tight, clamped hands and being mesmerized by the sight of lady dancing in flames, as the title music to The Tales of the Unexpected rang through living rooms up and down the country.

Now after last year’s smash hit Ghost Stories, The Liverpool Playhouse once more delves into the mysterious and peculiar as Jeremy Dyson adapts some of the most popular stories from Roald Dahl’s collection and brings them to life on the stage.
