Theatre is important for the development of younger minds; it allows the child or pre-teen to be immersed into a world where they can interact and understand their emotions in a way that quite often television and film cannot convey because of the system being a one-way flow of information.

To hold the attention of anyone, let alone that of a young eager mind, the story has to be entertaining, it has to have the thrill of the imagination weaved through it, delicate threads pulling together to make one large pattern, a stitch here and there creating the picture in which the story unfolds, unfurls with a flourish and which when seen with the benefit of distance is still just as valued as the moments when you are so close to the action that you cannot but smile and be drawn in by those creating the drama and the story.

The art of entertaining children, let alone an audience, is one that is vastly underrated. The minds of the young crave knowledge and yet they will not allow themselves to put up with the half baked or the condescending; for them a tale worth telling is a tale worth telling well, it is after all how we as a society get them to appreciate their imagination and treat it with respect and sanctity.

The Unity Theatre has a massive heart. It loves theatre, it loves its audiences and it loves Liverpool. This is evident in the eclectic and challenging work that fills its programme year upon year.
One such work is currently playing at the theatre, Tales from the Blue Room; a play from veteran playwright Pat Anderson and directed by former Liverpool Lunchtime Theatre director Paul Goetzee and which was originally presented as The Swan at the Liverpool Actor’s Studio
