The truth we seek, for the vast majority of times we find we cannot handle the revelation, that for all our sophistication and 21st Century thinking, we are still creatures often afraid of the dark and superstitious of what the light might bring; that we huddle together to plot the downfall of one because they bring knowledge that might disturb our tranquillity and comfort. In the veritas we seek but in the extreme and revolutionary we become as blind as those who refuse to bear witness.

What are the greatest of gifts you can give anybody, it isn’t anything you can wrap, you can’t spend it, you cannot offer it as a prize, for then the truly worthy don’t receive it and the undeserving don’t value it. Time, compassion, patience and the ability to listen without expecting to have to answer back, these are the greatest gifts and as a species we have become very bad at offering these moments to people without expecting some kind of reward.

The Second World War maybe over, the Shadow of the Cold War to come may high in the minds of the officials at MI5 but for Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle the war never really ends. The war on crime isn’t allowed to finish for the honest and fiercely loyal former Hasting’s policeman, no matter how much he would like to or how much some television executives have tried to retire the programme.
