Damien Dempsey, No Force On Earth. Album Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

We live in a time when commemorations and anniversaries are common place, we seem, quite rightly to remember and revere the past now with more affection and memory than we would have done even a generation ago; yet somehow we don’t seem to really grasp the enormity of those times as much as our collective tears and silent bows of heads suggest we should. We cannot understand just by the odd allusion to the fallen just what some gave in their fight for freedom; No Force On Earth can do that unless we ourselves lived through it or we have the power of a master story teller to be able to focus our attention on what happened and how the people lived.

There is no other way to describe the Irish singer Damien Dempsey than incredibly imposing in his natural gift of poetic words that shine like a beacon across from Dublin Bay and point out the injustice that still pervades across both countries that straddle the Irish Sea and imposing in his stature and honesty.

It is this talent, this raw, unflinching and thankfully untameable man that brings the songs of his life, that of the still forgotten people of that part of Ireland and the growing number of disposed and disenfranchised people beyond it which makes his new album, Almighty Love, such a remarkable and perfect statement.

Two acts with the same intensity, drive and showmanship sharing the night as a double header is rare but with Damien Dempsey kicking off the Liverpool Irish Music Festival in fine form, there was only one way Amsterdam could go in a very atmospheric o2 Academy and that was to match the whirlwind that is the popular Irishman and give the local and travelling fans a night to really let go and be proud of.

There is no two ways about it; a Damien Dempsey show is always going to be special, when it’s part of a double header involving Liverpool’s own Amsterdam then it’s going to considered the type of brilliant evening that anything else going on in Liverpool that night may as well resign itself to being relegated to small talk the following morning.
