Devon Allman, Ride Or Die. Album Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

There are times in the world when the mind starts to think just a little too much, that when all is said and done, the answers and the questions should be seen for what they truly are, just the musings of a child like race who doesn’t really get the point of life. They have every concept of genetically inherited flight or fight but they have no grasp of the ambition of the idea of Ride Or Die.

Life, Theatre Review. Gladstone Theatre, Port Sunlight.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

Cast: Suzanne Collins, Lenny Wood, Roy Brandon, Lynne Fitzgerald, Lesley Butler, Sam Hellier, Edwina Lea.

Life is in many respects all about the small victories, if you can wake each day and not fear the dawn, if you have a roof over your head, find that you are loved in even the smallest way and have food to eat. It represents the battle being won and perhaps the next day might constitute a smile worthy of being human; life is what happens every day, to all of us, each one capable of spreading a singular point of joy in the world, life is, as the song goes, what you make it.

Swiss Army Man, Film Review. Picturehouse@F.A.C.T., Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

Cast: Paul Dano, Daniel Radcliffe, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Antonio Ribero, Timothy Eulich, Richard Gross, Marika Casteel, Andy Hull, Aaron Marshall, Shane Carruth, Jessica Harbeck.

There are moments on screen when you wonder who exactly gave the green light to a project that on the face of it seems so incredibly preposterous that it surely only exists in the minds of the wonderfully imaginative but creatively bonkers. A story that somehow really should not work at all on film; yet has the power at the closing credits to have you smiling as you walk towards your bus or contemplate catching your train, a smile that borders on the enticed and cinematically romanced.

Do Not Let Me Dream.

Keep me from dreaming,

the vision is too much to handle

and I am afraid

of the tears that stain my face

and collect like man-made marbles,

pretty spherical toys that crush

like glass underfoot

the moment I am conscious

and caught staring

into the dazzling day, the moment I exist for real.

Let me sleep if I must

but do not let me dream, do not

let the vivid nature of these spectres

feel free to roam anymore,

for they are ghoulish

The Push Uphill.

The view

from the Sacre Coeur

was worth the agony

of the push

that the three of you

had to give, with panting curses

of the chair’s inability to propel

itself uphill, however

the taxi back down

after lunch and seeing the Eiffel Tower’s

steely resolve, sure made

an excellent ride.

Tiffany Stevenson, Seven. Comedy Review. Unity Theatre, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

It doesn’t seem five minutes since Tiffany Stevenson was wowing the crowds at this year’s Edinburgh Festival and yet in the month since she has been to America to discuss a film, reaffirmed her belief that Donald Trump is bad for women as well as others who may share the land of the free but somehow great for comedians and that somewhere along the line Giant Hogs are as dangerous a prospect in Louisiana as the possibility of Isis striking a direct hit in the swamps and that the great state relies heavily upon guns, lots of guns, weapons carried in full view and more than likely allowed in the disturbing scenes associated with a particular porn empire.

Red Butler, Nothing To Lose. Album Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

When there is Nothing To Lose there is always the thought that there is everything to win, something monumental to gain, too secure the true self revealed in the fight that life throws at you in the hope that you will rise above the negative.

Nothing To Lose, everything to gain and Red Butler once more show that having been Freedom Bound, they have kept the cynics, the intolerable pessimists and the down at heel detractors at bay by producing an album of absolute quality and music that is sensitive, commanding and aims straight like an arrow for the subject, piercing the formidable enemy’s armour and causing wound after wound to be opened.

Football In Aleppo.

They were caught playing football

on the broken street

of Aleppo, one brief glimpse

of normality taken and destroyed,

imagine if it was here, where boys

in rags and girls in tattered

woollen stocking remains were seen

to smile as they played in the brown,

water filled crater where a mortar bomb

had exploded the night before

in the rain of fire; imagine

if that was on the streets of Bootle,

on the blown apart roads

leading to where a school bell once rang

Surreal.

I

have no

natural inclination

towards

Art,

I love to stare and immerse

myself in the artist’s

mind and feel the flow

of the brush

on canvas;

however

I cannot draw,

keep the palate

still and create,

no The War Bride,

no Death of Nelson

or Mark Wilkinson classic

forth-coming

from these stubby, inadequate

fingers. I try though,

I attempt to paint

in the manner of the great surrealist,

I practice all the time, yet

somehow I cannot
