Terry Titter’s Spaced Out Christmas, Theatre Review. Unity Theatre, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

There are some institutions that are just too good to let go and wander off into the wilderness. Some needed bringing back every year to make sure they entertain the incredible multitude of fans they have and give them a good dose of laughter whenever possible. In Terry Titter’s case that should be for as long as he wants to.

The Unity Theatre and Terry Titter go back a long way, their partnership at this time of year a guaranteed sell-out to an audience hungry for Terry’s sly observational humour and cutting remarks, that always threaten to be enjoyed so heartily by the crowd that the much loved Christmas show in the theatre below, might just get a bit jealous.

Terry Titter’s Spaced Out Christmas takes no prisoners, and to be fair the audience would probably surrender willingly to the irreverent comedian without being ordered to surrender. His mannerisms and his look at life through the eyes of four different personas are just enough to send most audience members into fits of mirth, even when the joke is aimed squarely at them. Certainly one of his finest creations is Rene, a woman larger than life and with a personality to match. It is impossible not to smile when confronted by this persona. Whether she is talking about her husband’s lack of attention or bringing on the most superb R2D2, complete with mince pies in its dome, the audience were laughing so much that it was impossible not to join in.

An evening brimming with quick responses and golden age comedy, Terry Titter’s Spaced Out Christmas is a night out unlike anything else that the Unity put on all year round and this was a splendid way to end a stunning year at the theatre.

Terry Titter’s Spaced Out Christmas runs until December 22nd at The Unity Theatre.
