Ian McNabb, Great Things. Album Review.

Great Things is the new and aptly named studio album by the likeable and genial Liverpudlian, Ian Mcnabb. In the four years since his last album, much has changed for his beloved city during that time and it seems that the change has rubbed off on Ian’s music and lyric writing.

The new album is an enjoyable treat of eclectic songs that cross over several different styles in a very easy and effortless way. Opening with the title track Great Things, Ian takes the listener on a detailed tour of his thoughts and musings. It certainly is simple to see why Ian’s music has continued to be popular as his use of comfortable guitar playing belies the emotions that are always just below the surface.

Stand out track on the album is the superb All About a Woman which has a Steve Hackett type feel to it and is enhanced by the wonderful violin playing of Kate O’Brien.

Great Things is well produced and the inlay card is packaged in a way that it has the feel of a time when the cover of the album spoke volumes about what you could expect from the music inside. No bland cover of the artist in a posed shot which always screams that the musician is more important than the music. This album harks back to the days of a cover which can be talked about and savoured for years to come and leaves no doubt that Ian will always look at his work in a sensible artistic way rather than seeing pound notes flutter in front of him.

Superb to have Ian back doing what he does best and long may he continue to produce albums of this quality.
