Eric’s may have only been re-opened for a couple of months now but the acts they have had on  the  timeless stage and playing music that has reverberated in amongst the memories of the heady days of the 1970’s has been nothing short of scintillating and superb. Hot on the tails of the artists that have played there recently comes a band that would have gone down a storm at the old venue, such was the presence and musical ability of display of Mamas Gun.

Even with only two albums under their belt, the group played a set that didn’t just go down well with the audience; it positively sang and screamed beauty. From the tender and stunning vocals of Andy Platts through to the outrageously superb pop funk tempo that the band created, there was not one person in the crowd whose foot wasn’t tapping out the same rhythmic pattern of enjoyment by the end of the night.

There are a lot of bands around who could quite easily carry this dynamic and heart-warming musical styling but they certainly wouldn’t be able to carry of the pure stage presence at the same time. Andy Platts didn’t just sound great, he looked the part as his eyes blazed a hunger rarely seen in today’s world and the energy he gave off was infectious and lively. So much so that every member of the band gave off a smile of enjoyment as they played songs as rich sounding as the opening track of the evening, The Life and Soul, Rocket to the Moon and The Art from the album The Life and Soul and the tremendous Pots of Gold from the debut album Routes to Riches.

Without doubt, Mamas Gun provided a night out that was high on entertainment and outstanding in its delivery. Even if you’re not a fan of this type of music, attend a gig when they next play near you as the band will blow you away.
