The Christmas pantomime, one of the great cornerstones of life and nowhere in the world really captures the point or the reason of it as much as the British, it takes sheer guts to perform so many shows to an audience to whom many are arguably having their first taste of theatre, of the slapstick fun that is at times extraordinarily paced and presented and the fun that goes with it. It is the possibly the finest of traditions and Aladdin at the Epstein Theatre is no different and one that is all too enjoyable, no matter the age of the person in the seat.

Life is in many respects all about the small victories, if you can wake each day and not fear the dawn, if you have a roof over your head, find that you are loved in even the smallest way and have food to eat. It represents the battle being won and perhaps the next day might constitute a smile worthy of being human; life is what happens every day, to all of us, each one capable of spreading a singular point of joy in the world, life is, as the song goes, what you make it.

Life on Lark Lane is purr-fect for the Moggies, everything they could ask for, all they desire, is there to be enjoyed. All the furry feline’s nine lives are spent doing what cats do best, taking a stroll through the park, fine dining, watching the world go by with good friends and the only blot on the social calendar is having to deal with the squirrels, who are to be avoided just because they’re nuts.

The Ugly Sisters are running amuck at Hard-Up Hall, the evil step-mother has all under her spell and Buttons is infatuated with the most beautiful girl in all the land, things are never simple in Panto land and for Cinderella, the day is one where her life gets turned upside down and the story of her rags to riches existence becomes a tale of woe banished by charm.

The scars of war never truly fade and that is arguably the truest sentiment when it comes to the devastation visited upon Liverpool and Bootle during the dark days of The Blitz. Any visitor to the city, any person who has lived in the two neighbouring towns, will still be overawed by the monuments to the dead and the long nights endured by the people during the campaign to bring the people to their knees.
