The voices in our head are ones to which often guide us and steer us from trouble, they warn of the temptations, the moments that will knock us sideways, the ones that allow us to keep a clear conscious; it may be instinctive, it might be just common sense, but the voice of reason and respect is there to keep us from being foolish and a social pain.

Ghosts and legends are not just born in palaces and grand houses, hauntings are not confined to estates where a single dwelling lords over all it surveys, they are formed in the most modern of aspects, on council estates where the only horrors initially imagined was how it was acceptable to house people in such cramped quarters in such a small area; offering a sense of community, but of little value to their everyday lives.

Cast: Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, Alex Lowe, Mark Benton, Caroline Keiff, Dan Starkey, John Dorney, Nicholas Briggs.

Tom Baker’s incarnation and time as the fourth Doctor was never better than when he faced off against the scourge of Skaro, The Daleks. In Nicholas Briggs’ latest story for Big Finish, Energy Of The Daleks, Tom Baker is once more pitted against one of his greatest enemies and even though it was the first story that was recorded for the return of Tom Baker, there is much to admire in the delivery and the script.

Doctor Who, Wirrn Isle. Big Finish 158. Audio Drama Review.

Cast: Colin Baker, Lisa Greenwood, Tim Bentinck, Jenny Funnell, Tessa Nicholson, Rikki Lawton, Dan Starkey, Helen Goldwyn, Glynn Sweet.

There must be something about the Wirrn that can give dedicated listeners of Doctor Who delicious and nerve wracking nightmares. Add in the almost lonely, desolate feel that you get in William Gallagher’s script for Wirrn Isle and the creeping music that overlays the action and the play becomes a near pinnacle of Colin Baker’s time as the Doctor.

The Doctor’s lives are being extinguished too fast, the degeneration effect that is afflicting him is seeing the many faces of the time traveller rapidly thrown out of time and out of place. Old friends are unknown, and new ones forged in an order that would threaten the sanity of anyone, but to whom the one who cannot but help the universe when it faces trouble, it is one that could see the end of all that history and what is to come destroyed forever.

Stories are important, they are magical, they are a link to our past and our determination to see the future shaped in our image. Once a story has been silenced it becomes myth, the unspoken, the heritage of the speaker denied…but some tales persist in Time, they become the backdrop to our society, to our history and the dream that such days can once more return.
