Occasionally what Doctor Who needs is a good old fashioned ghost story…or at least what can pass for one in the world of science and speculative fiction, and like the classic New Who tale The Unquiet Dead, there is a lot more to take in than what may be read or heard as things that go bump in the night cannot be explained simply as a ghost, but as something far deadlier to The Doctor, Rose Tyler, and the Knights of Atlas in search of the lost spaceship Vesterbold.

A return of a foe thought defeated is always an occasion in which the listener of the Big Finish audios finds intriguing. There is after all always the need to delve further into the relationship between aggressor and the complex mind of the Doctor, and never more so when it one that is fought with the unshakable terror of what can be seen as the myth or the fairytale given corporeal form.

Ghosts and legends are not just born in palaces and grand houses, hauntings are not confined to estates where a single dwelling lords over all it surveys, they are formed in the most modern of aspects, on council estates where the only horrors initially imagined was how it was acceptable to house people in such cramped quarters in such a small area; offering a sense of community, but of little value to their everyday lives.

The reunion many have actively awaited for, for one of the shortest runs that a companion had with a single Doctor that certainly deserved more than a single season, more than just 13 episodes, and yet from the revival episode of Rose through to The Parting Of The Waves, Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper captivated a nation of fans with their dynamic and emotional resonance as they fought Autons, The Gelth, members of family Slitheen, and Nanogenes that rewrite human physiology, and all the while, and despite the darkness of one of the biggest surprise endings to a series ever concocted, they faced the universe with humour and a friendship that arguably hadn’t been seen on screen in the Who Universe since Jon Pertwee’s incarnation of the mad man from Gallifrey and the marvellous Sarah Jane Smith.

When we know the outcome, we may be distracted from learning the truth behind the tale.

For many, the fact that we have been taught to repeat facts ad nauseum, parrot fashion so that for example we can quote the dates of factory acts, of F.A. Cup finals, of Nobel prize winners with certainty, we forget to delve closer to the human being affected by or instrumental in the cause of history being made, altered, or even in some cases saved.

Rose Tyler has had to learn this the hard way, initially with her travels with the Doctor, then as she is stranded in another version of Earth, a parallel world where the fabric of time has altered certain aspects of what she, and the listener, would take for granted.
