As we near the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, it is apt that one of cinemas and theatres greatest satires is brought back to the public’s attention. Oh what a lovely War is one of those plays that demands attention and the respect for all those who take part in such a sensitive subject.

Joseph Heller adapted his novel Catch 22 for the stage in 1971 and today the script is more or less unchanged. As it is difficult to get the rights to adapt the script, Northern Stage’s director Rachel Chavkin has done what other companies have shied away from, and has put her own mark on this classic war tale.

Blue Remembered Hills, Theatre Review. Playhouse Theatre, Liverpool.

Cast: James Bolt, Phil Cheadle, Tilly Gaunt, Adrian Grove, Joanna Holden, David Nellist, Christopher Price.

It may not be considered as the pinnacle of Dennis Potter’s career as a playwright, that surely goes to the plays Pennies From Heaven and The Singing Detective but Blue Remembered Hills is certainly a Potter classic and one that shows that cruelty is not just confined to the adult world in which the backdrop of the Second World War rages but resides within us all from birth.
