There are song writers of such acerbic wit and deliciously well observed lyrics that when the time comes, as it assuredly must to all, the world of music will be at pains to understand why they weren’t more appreciated in their life time. Like the 19th and 20th Century devotees of Oscar Wilde, the clamour for true recognition might go unheard by the greater population starved of such lyrical insights and yet, somewhere deep in the bowls of the immersive and beautiful grin of gratitude we surely must give thanks with, Paul Heaton will always be remembered with clarity and honour.

It had been arguably many years since the last time many in Liverpool had seen Bill Bailey live so for that huge swathe of audience it would have been a huge moment of excitement to see his new show after the much adored Tinselworm tour. The Tinselworm tour was a packed out special at many arenas and which had seen Bill play in big cavernous rooms, so it was a real treat for all concerned to see one of their favourite comedians in a smaller more intimate setting.

The gas man cometh,

steely eyed and no laughter

in their ice cold veins

but a sense of duty abounds

to stop the whiff of pissing gas

blowing us to Kingdom come.

 

The new cooker gets installed,

not a monumental day in the life of all,

but the safety of normality is ensured

as being able to grill bacon,

which they say too much meat will murder you,

and ignite the hob

without having to use a faltering Bryant and May,

brings saliva rushing to the lips

There should be a new maxim used in the world of music, that if Boo Hewerdine is happy to endorse you, to take interest in your song writing capability, then who are we to argue.

All Messed Up (And Nowhere To Go) is the debut E.P. from Talk Show, the group sounding pseudonym for Maidstone singer-songwriter Lawrence O’Shea, and the sound that comes across, produced with the same drive and sense of purpose as the man behind the songs, the great Boo Hewerdine, is one that captivates and intrigues in equal measure.
