Tori Amos once wrote that only women bleed, it caused much debate at the time but undoubtedly she was correct in her assertion, the female of the species may be more deadly than the male but its suffering at the hands of masculine and the aggressive feminine is enough to understand why Feminism is needed now more than ever. It might be a call for sisterhood in some quarters but the damage that a woman receives from her own gender, her own doubts and fears is enough to feel the heartbreak that comes with Laura Marling’s Semper Femina.

Only When You Are Dead.

They only tell you

when they hear

that you are dead,

just how much they love you.

The outpouring of grief on the streets,

The middle class avenues filled

with popular opinion and anguish

and in the houses of the fashionable

you get the sympathetic nod becoming of their understanding

and they hear the wails from the true believers;

they are unified when you die,

when the starlet fails to shine early one morning

or when the hero packs away his whip

She Had No Heroes.

She had no heroes,

no room in her life

for such romantic thought

or strength of feminine culture.

No heroes, not any more.

She swore off them, respect

whittled away

chip by whittled chip

and now the only hero

in her life

is the one who lives

in an imagined world

where She sleeps, catatonic

and death like; the hero arrives

faceless but frees her from her cell, her prison, her solitary

confinement.

Smooth comes in eras, just like every word in the English language, its connotation changes with the times, its use of fashionable deployment in certain arenas and sentences can be implied with good intent and praise or can be damning, the undertone of sarcasm firmly attached to the point where it hard to block the kicking forever.

Liverpool and the vast majority of the United States of America don’t have that much in common, take out New York City and its melting pot of institutions and flavoursome watering holes with the nights of poetry, music and lively debate aside, there really is not a lot to tie the city beside the Mersey say with Texas, Georgia or the Mid West States where cowboys still roam and the talk is of oil, current incumbents of the White House and rattlesnakes.

The age old question of how to warm up an audience to the point where the inner thermostat is making the mercury rise to the occasion, but not peaking too soon so that it blows out any possible enjoyment as the night progresses, is one that always makes for great debate on a night out. You want someone with class, with poise, great demeanour and content but someone who also knows exactly where to take the audience too, the cup of perfect tea surrounded by those would overfill the saucer is always more enjoyable.
