That every single ripple of Humanity’s suffering for ever would in some way touch your heart and then corrode it, tarnish it against the pain and eventually leave you cold and as unfeeling a rock in the baked and merciless deserts. Immortality comes at a price, life is something that no longer becomes precious and the cost to the soul can be devastating.

It is the ripples in time, the footprints in the sand that are able to be navigated without too much effect; it is the big things, the death of someone to who history might have forgotten and passed over for ever had it not been for The Doctor coming into their lives and persuading them, quite rightly, that they have a part to play in the way that the Universe evolves.

Just when viewers have got used to the thought that there might never be another reason to long for the quiet of Oxfordshire, to revel in the mystery of the Isis and the quaintness of Middle-class murder, I.T.V. reel back Detective Inspector Lewis, D.I. Hathaway and Detective Sergeant Maddox for another round of homicides in the leafy university city.

Poetry is not everyone’s cup of tea. To some, perhaps misguided, possibly even consciously ignorant of the form and its turbulent history, the seismic revolt against strained form and stiff suited underwhelming development that shook the world post World War Two, is nothing more than pretension, a dip into the ocean without a bathing suit or a pair of trunks to hide the soul and yet arguably poetry has never been as popular now in the 21st Century at any time since the days when Allen Ginsberg tore apart convention at the Royal Albert Hall and delivered the 20th Century standard bearer, Howl.

There are moments in the world of science fiction in which as a viewer, the onlooker into the world of the fantastic and seemingly off kilter from our own perceptions of reality. Where you just know in a darkened corridor or locked basement where writers are kept from the prying eyes of the public and their demands, that the occasional fist bump, high five or even hugging with certain amounts of glee are to take place when they explain themselves out of a possible predicament in a story line. If that is the case then all three signs of exuberant showmanship should have been heard somewhere around the bay of Cardiff as the fourth episode of the 2015 series of Doctor Who played out.

It is perhaps a shame that the biggest case that U.C.O.S. will never have will be finding out the assailant at B.B.C. who decided that New Tricks had run its course and left to linger a death on a Tuesday night with a knife in its back that was unbecoming of such a widely appreciated and at times un-missable television.

The lesson to be learned around the Doctor is to be careful what you wish for, to never search for that what you seek, for in asking for adventure rather than it sneaking up on you, by taking you by surprise, the very real possibility that Death may come haunting you is to be remembered and observed.
