Eagles, The History Of The Eagles, Gig Review. Echo Arena, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * * *

The Echo Arena in Liverpool was built for nights such as this, the Midsummer sun starting to wind its way back to the southern hemisphere, the evening glow of June racing its way across the Irish Sea and on its way America to the home of some finest rock bands you could ever hope to see play in the place where legends were born. A city that gave legends its British meaning to the country rock scene of the Eagles, legendary music that if written down in a book would be classed as fable, too fabulous for words but with a spirit that endured for over 40 years. You might never see the Eagles in Liverpool again, for those who took advantage of the summer sun giving its warmth to the city below; they were further warmed by the afterglow of some of the finest music to ever come out of America.

The turning of the year, perhaps in some ways even more important, more evocative to those who live by the natural setting of the Sun than the human construct of December 31st and January 1st, the day when for those in the North; the clock starts to slide towards the darkness once more. The minutes start to chip away from both ends until the chaotic beauty of the world becomes shrouded in darkness for a few months.

The close, muggy feeling of trapped heat that enveloped the city of Liverpool, heat which made normally persistent shadows perspire with sweat and groan under the Sun’s blessed fury would normally eat into the energy reserves of anybody finding themselves out and about on a June day. For some artists an understanding audience would forgive and forget if they gave a slightly subdued performance because of it, However inside the Zanzibar Club, the members of Selfish Lovers gave an altruistic performance which jumped off the stage and straight into the welcoming arms of a relieved audience.

To be in Liverpool as a music fan you really do have to pinch yourself sometimes just to make sure that what you are feeling is true and not just a karmic evil spirit giving you a good time only to say at the end, “None of it was true, it was all a dream, how’s that for Karma; love the rest of the U.K.

When you are an accomplished and forthright musician and producer, it must be high level of instinct that drives the musical notes down the veins and out into the public arena; especially when you are opening the evening for a very talented lady who can charm the socks off an audience just by opening her mouth and letting the lush tones fall where they may.

Rarely do you go out to see a musician on stage for the first time and come away feeling as though you have seen the blossoming stages of hybridisation of elegant poetry and the subtleness of keyboards notes wafting through the air as if caught on the wings of a Red Admiral in full flight. However for anybody in the Zanzibar Club in Liverpool ahead of a long steamy night, that is exactly what they would have felt stirring as they watched Luke Cusato perform.

With a world that has so much going on a daily basis, sometimes an act may get overlooked. The fast pace of modern life ensuring that art mournfully suffers as the call on someone’s time eats into what would be a pleasurable experience. Either that or the prevalence to sit in an overcrowded bar with piped music assaulting the ears in much the same way waking up in amongst a flock of hungry seagulls at four in the morning would be inexcusably painful really is how people like to spend their spare time. Either way, to have missed Run Tiger Run give a commanding performance at the Zanzibar Club was one that should eat into the musical soul labelled regret.

You can wait years for an Eagles tour to come round; however no matter what, it is something that at least once in your life you need to be able to say you did. There would be no regrets, no thought of feeling as if the motions were being underplayed, what you get is one of the most entertaining, thoughtful and considered nights out you are likely to witness.  The quality of Don Henley and Glen Frey’s song-writing, the amazing spectacle of Joe Walsh, arguably one of the true greats of American Rock, the appearance of Bernie Leadon causing a ripple of welcoming gasps throughout  the auditorium and the perfect voice of Timothy B. Schmit all rolled up in to a perfect wrecking ball of a band.

There will always be a place for your favourite music, the heart, nor brain ever lets go of any of the lyrics that you spent most of your life memorising to the point that if pushed you could recite them word for word under exam conditions whilst sinking in quick sand and rescue only possible if you even get the obscure releases pitch perfect.

There is a well beaten path that has emerged once more between the fiords of Norway and the port of Liverpool. It has come back to life in recent years as the city opens its arms with anticipation at the thought of more good music finding its way to the venues of the undoubted capital of music culture in the U.K.
