Liverpool Sound And Vision: The Saturday Supplement, An Interview With Kaya Carney.

Kaya Herstad Carney is part of the tremendous band Science of the Lamps. Born in Norway, a six hour drive north of the Arctic Circle, she came to Liverpool to study at L.I.P.A. and graduated in 2003. Her band Science of the Lamps released a self-titled E.P. a few weeks ago and it has captured the imagination of all those have listened to it. I was able to catch up with this hugely likeable, talented and enthusiastic musician for a short while after one of her Threshold meetings at the Bridewell.

For anyone who was fortunate enough to catch Igor Memic’s production of Happy at the Lantern Theatre this year, not only was it a first rate play designed to make audiences think but it was one of the finest moments in surreal escapism that crowd would have been privy to see during 2012.

Igor Memic is an enigma, driven and destined it seems to go on and make the theatre a place where his name will be seen for many years. Igor was born in Mostar, Bosnia to a Bosnian mother and Croatian father. It is this exotic mix, combined with a love of London and Liverpool that makes him an impressive figure to talk to.

The sound of the station announcer’s voice at Liverpool Lime Street Station booms over the crowds making their way home after a hard day’s work in the city or as they pile in to the bars and music venues dotted around arguably the most vibrant city in the North of England. In amongst the organised chaos, the serenity of having a conversation with Matt Breen of The Endings about music, the band and being on the next step of his career is an oasis of calm.

One of the joys of being in a city such as Liverpool is the abundance of theatres that cater for all tastes and for all actors wishing to tackle the well-trodden boards and add their names to the list of watched and admired artists.

Liverpool Sound And Vision: The Sunday Postscript, An Interview With Joe Symes And Colin White

Liverpool and its surrounding areas that make up Merseyside have a lot to be thankful for when it comes to music. Nowhere it seems is the abundance of bands so heavily noticeable as the city of Liverpool that The Beatles, the likes of The Icicle Works, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Space and a whole load of other groups and singers called home and in which the last ten years the new breed of musicians have come to regard as the place where it is good to be from.

Mary Coughlan is a born survivor and a woman of extreme passion who is able to sing straight from the heart. Since releasing her debut album in 1985 on Mystery Records, Tired and Emotional, Mary has gone on to record some truly classic songs in her own indomitable and exciting manner.

This year sees Ms. Coughlan come to Liverpool as part of the Liverpool-Irish Festival 10th anniversary celebrations and Mary will be performing as part of this at St. George’s Hall on the 18th October and whilst resting at home after performing to packed out shows in Sweden, I was able to catch up with the Irish singing sensation ahead of the festival.

In eighteen short months the life and career of musician Stephen Langstaff has taken on almost sky rocket proportions, for a young man he was already well known as a decent support act in his own right and was able to open for the Bangles at the Academy on their tour in the summer of 2008. Stephen then got the call to support the Lightning Seeds at the Liverpool Philharmonic and then a coveted opening spot for Deacon Blue at this years Liverpool Summer Pops at the Echo Arena.

Peter Pan Pantomime Preview And Interviews With Les Dennis And Natasha Hamilton.

This year the Empire theatre in Liverpool have pulled out all the stops to provide families, couples and any one who just wants the chance to relieve childhood by booing loudly at the villain of the piece at this year’s Pantomime. The line up who will be donning the tights and slapping thighs will include the versatile Les Dennis whose C.V. reads like a catalogue of comedy characters, Atomic Kitten member Natasha Hamilton as Peter Pan and the legend that is the Fonz from Happy Days: Henry Winkler.

I last caught up with Stephen Langstaff just under a year ago when he was about to go on his eagerly awaited Academy tour at four different venues. This tour opened up more doors to the young Liverpool singer/songwriter and in the following year he has had the distinct pleasure of opening for the Lightning Seeds on their latest tour, culminating in a fantastic critically received gig at the Cadogan Hall, London.

Pete Trewavas Of Marillion And Transatlantic Interview, High Voltage.

Originally published by L.S. Media. July 27th 2010.

It’s the afternoon after the two nights before and I find Pete Trewavas in an unexpected jovial mood. I shouldn’t be really surprised, sure he has spent the last two nights playing and rocking out with two of the three acts he is associated with, the night before High Voltage with Marillion in Leamington Spa and the Saturday night with super group Transatlantic, but there is something different about the genial bass player that sets him apart from others in his position.
