You would be forgiven for thinking that Arthur Conan Doyle’s seminal gothic tale, The Hound of The Baskervilles, could not be adapted in any shape or form more than what has gone before; you would be forgiven, but as with anything that has history nipping at its ankles, the reality is that as long as the human mind can imagine it, then that beast, that means of murder and intrigue can be shown to continue to haunt the dreams of all who dare try to solve the mystery taking place in the lonely, haunting, dangerous moors of south west England.

Charles Dickens’ tale of The Signalman is one of the most creative stories from the British writer, shorter than his other works of fiction, but one that gets to grips with the century’s fear of the technology of the time, the sense of dread that came with innovation, the sounds of machines.

Few people are synonymous or as intrinsically linked to a disease as that as Mary Mallon. The full name of the Irish immigrant to 19th Century New York might leave a blank look upon the face of many, but that single given name, coupled and tied with the terror of Typhoid, will leave a scar of realisation, the chill of how infection and disease are humanity’s greatest threat to existence.

We take radio for granted now, in much the same way as television, as any device that allows us to hear the words of another several thousand miles away from home, and yet we must remember what it must have been like to experience that sensation for the first time, the moment that radio burst into the home and allowed, for example, cricket fans to enjoy a day at Old Trafford, the first outside broadcast from The Albert Hall, and allow old soldiers to hear The Last Post from fields in France as commemorations of World War One were held to honour the fallen…we take radio for granted, but in the hands of dark forces, that benevolence of human spirit and endeavour can be turned against us

The extremeness of erasing a life from existence is not as simple as it may seem. For all the people, rightly or wrongly ‘cancelled’ by society because of ill-thought, of a perceived tone of voice when explaining a situation, or because deep down we find their presence to not agree with our judgement of society, the way some have come to believe that a 1984 like world can exist if we scour away all those that defy our perception and image we wish to project.
