Dystopia is a place often visited in the arts, perhaps never more so than in the theatre. The natural surroundings of the enclosed space, the door to the outside world close at hand but out of reach due to the way that your neighbour next to you will look at you with suspicion and hate filled eyes should you interrupt their train of thought, all combine to make Dystopia more real, more authentic than any other way of getting the flesh to crawl at what just could be if apathy and lethargy allow it take control.

In a year when the most powerful nation on Earth finally saw sense and changed what it meant to be seen as an equal, Grin Theatre’s Queertet makes its fourth foray into the world of theatre with four new stories that tell of hope, love and even the element of danger at the Unity Theatre over three nights from Wednesday 22nd to Friday 24th July.

Queertet has been described as the jewel in the crown of Grin Theatre’s output, a rare company that talks the talk when it comes to delivering stories of a L.G.B.T. nature and a company that really sings with pride of all it has achieved in the city.

Catching A Cold In St. Malo.

The St. Malo air was crisp on the July morning

that I heard down the crackling line

of the only phone

box in the towering vicinity

that my

Grand Mother had

suffered

a heart attack.

 

I had been walking for weeks, the chance to stop

for a while and take stock,

take the map out of the bag

and contemplate my next move, one that

unlike my time in America,

I was determined

was not going to end in a premature way

The pulse of a thousand suns beating in harmony throughout the Universe is a sound denied to Humanity and the deaf ear we place to the reason of existence we ignore for the vast majority of the time. It is a sound that if captured would serve us well to understand that we are not alone but that we are also quite insignificant when it comes to knowing our place in the great cosmic storm.

On the subject of ageing,

I fear it’s not for me,

I just like wallowing in memories far too much

to have them snatched or slowly corroded, decayed

or fading into the golden sun-sleight of

half forgotten anecdotes and blistered self-denial

to not remember you, your brushed long hair, and trembling

smooth skin as you leant in for a second kiss,

to ever allow old-age the promise

of victory in wondering

who the women is when I look at a

sepia toned photograph, torn through the middle

From out of the mist and the warm steam of the train that arrived in Liverpool in 1912 came a shudder, the feeling of a disease walking with the casual air of authority and frightened clash of Time as the supposed six months of Adolf Hitler’s time in Liverpool before World War One bore fruit a hundred years on.

The once seasoned traveller had no choice but to listen to the sounds that were coming from all around them in which to remember certain events and their feelings and reactions to them if they wanted to put them into the context of a piece of art in which to highlight the gift that nature and humanity provides in serious abundance.

For good or bad its possible now to add your own soundtrack to life, whether on the go about town or making the most of the once in a life time opportunity to see the world for its own dynamic wonder, the ears are attuned to something else rather than the sound from the exterior and artistically it somehow makes life less interesting.
