King 810, La Petite Mort Or A Conversation With God. Album Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

You can have as many one sided chats with the almighty as you want but in the end, as many have found to their cost throughout the centuries, She might not or cannot be bothered, to answer back. You only have to look at some of the real hardships faced in the world, the displacement, the cities sacrificed and those with too many loose morals with the fingers on the cull switch to understand that having a conversation with god is about as useful as striking up a discussion with Death.

Life is a lottery, a moment in which when your time to shine is perhaps over, you slink back into the shadows and let the next generation have their say; not exactly, not ever, if the message is strong, if the words and the ideals are still relevant then no matter the time in that person’s life, the yardstick in which their years as an ambassador, as a rebel with a cause, is what matters. For Ian Hunter & The Rant Band, Fingers Crossed, they will forever be the ambassador and the rebel, the vanguards of the good fight of the eternal battle against the humdrum and the tediously packaged.

Shakin’ Stevens, Echoes Of Our Times. Album Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 8.5/10

If it is your friends that shape you as you stride the path ahead, then it has to be your family that make you what you are, you may not realise it, you may not even care, but it is your blood that has bought you to this point in time and the stories of your ancestors are just as, if not more important that your own. It is a realisation that Shakin’ Stevens has found and played within the realm of his new album, the enjoyable, the pleasurable and unrelenting Echoes Of Our Times.

I Await Our Archduke Ferdinand Moment.

I await our Archduke Ferdinand moment,

the catalyst in which many of us will fade

into history’s notebook and which is followed

by the eraser, the silver tongue

with white mesh, diseases

of the throat capturing the lies,

spreading the hatred;

I await the gossip that spews

from the fountain of knowledge

and know that all I have learned,

all I have tried in vain

to remember

will be put down in a diary,

hidden under rubble

till the world is awash

with God’s curse.

The very best of men are those that have the mystique of being legendary about them, the glow that the audience sees on stage and who revel in the mystery but also appreciate the man, the very human, the down to Earth persona of the artist who is extremely talented but immensely humble about their contribution to the world, the music and souls they have touched.

I Knew Laura Dentt Stevens.

I knew Laura Dentt Stevens,

intimately perhaps, sharing

the same space

for a while, trading thoughts

and the ultimate fuck you

to the outside world

who thought we were

irrelevant students,

I was too old to have an opinion,

my thoughts immaterial,

unrelated to the hip and groovy

paid by the latest clothes and fashions;

she was, to my mind,

sarcastic, but fun, the kind

of girl who got the point

of existence, which was not

to exist,

or at least not to be an arse about it;

Nostalgia, the driving force that reminds us that Time is not always a kindly benevolent force, that the moment we find ourselves in must be seized upon, fully explored and the point between the tick and tock is all to fleeting; love, if it is found in that moment, should be dived into regardless of the consequences. Nostalgia, it is what keeps the brain coming back for more of what it needs and the soul for what it loves. In the music of Fleetwood Mac, in whatever form and guise across the decades, is the love that brings many people together and it is with a nostalgic glint in their eyes that Fleetwood Bac play to the audience at the Epstein Theatre with.

There is no point owning a book if you are only ever going to read one chapter at random, if you are going to take one arbitrary sentence and turn it into a mantra for living and believe that it will solve all humanity’s ills and negative aspects; to truly understand the author you have to read the whole thing, you must listen to their words and decipher them, live them fully and drive onto the biggest peak, the largest summit you can master.

Hunt For The Wilderpeople, Film Review. Picturehouse@F.A.C.T., Liverpool.

Cast: Sam Neil, Julian Dennison, Rima Te Wiata, Rachel House, Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne, Oscar Kightley, Stan Walker, Mike Minogue, Cohen Holloway, Rhys Darby, Troy Kingi, Taika Waititi, Hamish Parkinson, Stu Giles.

In Sam Neil the cinema has had one of strongest and most consistent actors of the last 50 years, a man who can easily transfer himself between the rigours of being part of a great film and the sideshow that television sometimes provides. It has always been something of an honour to watch his complex character unfold, and even in films that haven’t quite hit the mark, he still retains that genuine affection from the forgiving cinema goer.

I Remember You, Fondly.

Nostalgia

it burns,

the yearning for yesterday,

the songs and sights

of a past that cannot be connected

or revisited

for the colour photograph in your mind

has turned sepia, discoloured,

browned and parched by the sun,

they can only be seen as

fragments,

disjointed,

the wreckage,

the rubble you left behind.

Nostalgia

I remember you

fondly.
