Train, California 37. Album Review.

Train have finally released their sixth studio album, California 37, and in small parts it was well worth the three year wait that fans of this American folk rock band have had to endure.

The parts that work well, have a delightful and attention seeking quality that rarely gets played, or even a second thought this side of the Atlantic but in the United States of America can seem two a penny and for that it is a shame. For what can seem sometimes fresh and a tad exciting in Heswall or Coventry is already inducing boredom in Texas or Philadelphia.

It has to be said that to have Carrianne Hayden back in Liverpool and opening an expansive and incredible night of music at St. Brides Church is nothing short of heart-warming and a huge extra boost in the arm of music in Liverpool.

Stealing Sheep have had an impressive rise the last twelve months, not content with giving a show stealing performance supporting Emmy the Great at the Stanley Theatre at the University of Liverpool; they were also nominated in this year’s inaugural GIT Awards hosted at Leaf on Bold Street in the last week.  Now at St. Brides Church, as part of an eclectic night of music hosted by All We Are, they blew the audience away to the point where the crowd simply sat and appreciated their dynamic music and with big smiles on their faces.

You can count on the fingers on one hand the amount of bands that could get away with playing a video of their latest single at the start of a gig, that figure would be greatly reduced to one once you get to see the phenomenal All We Are on You Tube.

All We Are…are simply phenomenal and this comes across in the new E.P. We Hunt which was launched at the unlikely setting of St. Brides Church in Liverpool. Accompanied by an extremely good video for the song Trainspotting which delves into the world of 1940’s Film Noir, We Hunt is an E.P. that deserves nothing but the highest praise.

Jack White has long since departed The White Stripes, has dabbled with various artists, other bands including The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, Bob Dylan, Norah Jones; and for all that is known, Uncle Tom Cobley and his eclectic band of English nursery rhymes.

Stephen Langstaff has come a long way in such a short space of time, it’s a wonder that he has found the time to stand still and reflect on his life so far, let alone go into the studio and come out with a stunning album that does justice to his prestigious talent but also features one of the finest Roy Orbison covers ever recorded.

There are times when you don’t need a full band behind you giving you the extra impetuous to thrill a capacity crowd. A voice perhaps and keyboard will do and when you are Greg and Pat Kane from Scottish Jazz/Funk stalwarts Hue and Cry.

Graham Gouldman is one of music’s nice guys and rather than adhering to the proverb of nice guys finishing last, it’s quite easy to see by looking at the faces of every audience member at every gig, that his, and that of 10cc, appeal and fortitude has seen his through to be one of the elder statesmen of the British music scene.

Much respected for his contribution to music across six decades, Graham Gouldman effortlessly plays the music that has thrilled generations of music fans and can have any crowd, no matter how fickle, stop and listen and ultimately love him.

Among the many things to thank the B.B.C. for, somewhere near the very top should be that unlike the amount of early pioneering television programmes that were wiped to save money and space, at least the corporation managed to have the foresight to know where they could lay their hands on the early recordings of some of the more influential pop groups of the sixties.
