The Wellgreen, Gig Review. The Cavern, Liverpool. International Pop Overthrow, 2014.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

The International Pop Overthrow would be an awful lot poorer if the abundance of great acts north of the dotted line that separates Scotland and England found themselves bereft of a slot or ten inside The Cavern over the seven day period in which the music plays lovingly down the ears of all who attend. In the year in which the key question of Independence for Scotland gathers pace, the music that the nation is proud of producing is still very important to both sides of that in question line.

Liverpool especially is always honoured to feel the tartan embrace of any band coming all the way down the M6 to play at any of the venues and 2014 is no different. The near ecstasy in the applause for The Wellgreen should offer nothing but support for Scottish music, Pop, Rock, Folk, being adored in the temperature rising confines of The Cavern.

If The Cavern had been slightly on the sparse side during the afternoon it would have been because of that other love in the lives of Scousers, the F.A. Cup Final being shown once more at the ridiculous time of 5pm, however as the referee’s whistle confirmed an old name reappearing on the grand trophy, The Wellgreen stood up on stage and drank in the steady air, the small glimmer of musical intoxication gathering strength and a crowd ready to take in all they could throw at them.

A great set followed, in fact it would have been a surprise had it been anything but lively and entertaining, if the vocals had not been anything but sublime and if the crowd had not gone as wild as if Steven Gerrard had scored the winner had Liverpool played on a warm May day. All four members gave the late evening session a tremendous start and with tracks such as Going Home, the blistering Sunday, the highly gratifying Grin and Bear It, the wonderful Counting All These Moments and the tantalisingly titled Maybe It’s The Pressure of The City Life That’s Tearing Us Apart, the audience must have felt that what they were seeing was just the start of very big time ahead for the new look band.

A cracking set by a superb band, The Wellgreen are a group the rises to the challenge of exceptional brilliantly.
