The Capstone Theatre is honoured to welcome June Tabor who will be performing at the venue on Friday 22nd March at 7.30pm. Bewitching audiences since her debut performances in 1976, Tabor continues to cast her spell over music lovers with a lyrical genius that reaches far beyond the folk scene. This particular performance sees a return to her earlier ‘chamber’ style, allowing June’s voice to take audiences on a storytelling journey unlike any other.
Described by Time Out as ‘one of the greatest storytellers of the Modern Age’, Tabor used her earlier career as a librarian to place great importance on lyrics, likening good song-writing to that of creating a good short story. She would often accompany these lyrics with little or no instruments at all, favouring the opportunity to encapsulate the true meaning behind the songs using her celebrated folk style.
Following her acclaimed debut Airs and Graces (1976), equalled successes Ashes And Diamonds (1977) and Abyssinians (1983) soon followed. Often collaborating with similar musical talents, Tabor has worked with Maddy Prior (Steeleye Span), guitarist Martin Simpson and most significantly pianist Huw Warren who has remained with Tabor for much of her career. The 90s also saw a longstanding collaboration with Oysterband, beginning with Freedom and Rain (1990).
Now over 35 years and 20 albums later, Tabor is returning to her solo folk-based roots and her 2013 concerts revisit her earlier style, using listening venues to allow her voice to explore the deep emotion behind the lyrics, and deliver a storytelling experience not seen with many singers. Joined once again by long-time friend and performer pianist Huw Warren, accordionist Andy Cutting and viola player Mark Emerson, all of whom worked on her latest solo album Ashore (2011), providing the accompaniment that allows ‘one of Britain’s most emotive voices’ (Mojo) to shine through.
