The Reasoning, Adverse Camber. Album Review.

There is an old saying that goes “If it isn’t broke, don’t change it”. The Reasoning sort of hold true to that adage for the third studio album Adverse Camber, what they have done instead is taken all that they have learned over the last few years and gone one better. The result is an album full of great, solid and cleverly written songs that screams for your attention from the moment you press the play button.

It might have been hard to top Dark Angel both in terms of music and in production, but in the safe hands of bass guitarist and founding member Matt Cohen the album sounds clear, concise and a joy to listen too. In particular Matt has blended vocalist Rachel Cohen, guitarist Dylan Thompson and new girl Maria Owen’s individual styles to a point where they bounce off each superbly.

The addition of Tony Turrell has to be considered a bonus as his keyboards weave and wander purposely through the six tracks on offer, the sound he managed to produce over the years, whether with Fish or own his own, has faithfully stayed with him and has also enhanced The Reasoning’s unique sound.

Stand out moments on the album have to be The Thirteenth Hour which will leave you floored and have you correcting your disbelief in that Prog can be so entertaining. Also the wonderfully titled Script Switch Trigger which will have close-reading experts occupied for months.

An album that will suit the uninitiated and the loyal fan alike, full of deft movements and cracking lyrics, which will make it a sure hit for this Cardiff based band.

It is without doubt easy to see why The Reasoning are being tipped by many critics to be the standard bearer for the new Progressive movement. For those with any reservations over this, order yourself the new album and prepare for greatness.
