Hayely Squires Play, Vera Vera Vera, Comes To The Lantern Theatre.

A young man comes back from war far away in a wooden box; he’s then glorified and called a hero. As the funeral plans are made in a small northern town in Lancashire, his siblings squabble over who he was and what they were to him.

Written by Hayely Squires, Vera Vera Vera is a black, comic piece, with themes such as drugs, violence, neglect and apathy. It asks the question of ‘what you are willing to fight for?’ Gritty, loud and taboo, this modern play will leave a lasting impression on its audience.

If you keep your wits about you, you will not be harmed. If you keep the information that you hold to yourself and don’t give into the piercing stare, the charm and easy smile of the interrogator then you will have avoided The Judgement of Hakim. Find yourself in left wing book shop, too late, he knows and you’re on a list, read right wing literature, he knows and you’re on a list, buy a certain food, on a list, in fact anything you do in life is listed and what you hold as freedom is just purely an illusion but vital to the trade of the interrogator.

Sink Or Swim, Theatre Review. The Studio, Playhouse Theatre, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

Cast: Paul Duckworth, Graham Geoffrey Hicks, Shaun Mason.

Sink or Swim, a play conceived from falling in love with a postcard and with the care and attention that productions deserve, has grown up to be one of the funniest, enjoyable and thought provoking plays likely to be seen this year.

The Studio upstairs at The Playhouse Theatre added the claustrophobic weight needed to give the three actors, the sublime Paul Duckworth, the charming Graham Geoffrey Hicks and the impressive Shaun Mason, the lack of room on stage to make Sink Or Swim a production that sees into men’s souls and how they deal with the most extreme part of survival.

Award Winning Company, Spike Theatre, To Bring Sink Or Swim To The Playhouse Studio.

Award-winning theatre company Spike Theatre will stage the world première tour of new production Sink or Swim this spring promising to take audiences on a theatrical voyage using comedy, music and song. Directed by Spike’s Artistic Director Mark Smith, the devised play will be scripted by Robert Farquhar while Spymonkey’s Toby Park will co-direct and compose music for the piece.

Taking inspiration from tales of the 18th century ‘bedlam ships’ the company will tour to venues in both the North West and South East of England on the show’s maiden voyage with support from new venue partners Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse and The Lowry.

There are so few theatre companies that get the chance to put on a recently found classic by Aristophanes, lovingly restored with some academic attachments and a room of serious people nodding their heads and then talking about why Greek theatre is better than anything that’s written today.
