When you have seen the joke before, the punchline becomes inevitable…

And yet it must be said, if the joke is crafted well, you cannot but help smile and laugh, even though you know the setup, even though you know what’s coming, it still raises the corners of the mouth and gives way to that the emotion of being amused, of enjoying the company which told you the series of events which culminate in that often repeated punchline.

The life of the murderer has always intrigued the armchair detective to the point where it can blind them to a truth when the presence of a serial killer becomes aware to them. There is after all a fundamental difference between a one off taking of life to that of wilfully continuing the senseless slaughter of people, and whilst murder should never be condoned, never be seen as anything abhorrent, the armchair detective and the scandal magazine readers almost salivate over every detail of the serial killer’s purpose and belief, forgetting that underneath it all, are the victims, the stories behind the death.

To be inspired in difficult and trying times is to accept that the human condition requires stimulating, craves arousal of spirit, and whilst art has undoubtedly suffered without mercy during 2020, there is something of the eternal machine of hope that grinds on, that beats in the heart of every artist of every persuasion, that the show, in whatever format, must go on.

We are playing dangerous games with the Devil, not the fabled creature who fell foul of a Celestial’s wrath, not the inhabitant of that Church and Bible inspired cess pit of flames and torture but instead our very own devil, our naked ambition, our rape of the land and the unquenchable thirst to dominate our will upon the throne of greed and violation. Our willingness to fracture the land in the pursuit of gas is one that will be an undoing, one in which will unleash a poison unless stopped, and one that audiences will find perfectly ripe for exploiting in a comedy-horror.

Cast: Reece Witherspoon, Michael Sheen, Nat Woolf, Lake Bell, Pico Alexander, Candice Bergen, Lola Flanery, Jon Rudnitsky, Reid Scott, Josh Stamberg.

It is a struggle at times to show sympathy to someone who is intent on hurting themselves artistically, to whom the relationship between film lover and the offering on the screen is far below par and mainly due to the insistence of saccharine in the diet, leaves you feeling sluggish, desperate for something, anything to add a punch to overload placed before you. It is a struggle but one that seems to be forever on the menu, just slightly dished up in a different casing, in numerous sweet deserts, it is the feeling that you are Home Again and nothing has truly changed.
