Midsomer Murders: The Witches Of Angel’s Rise. Television Review.

In every English village there surely must be at least one person to whom the belief of the dark arts marks them out as strange within the tightly wrapped community. The interest shown at a young age in magic, in spells, the lure of the Tarot cards and all that it entails, can leave the collective gossiping, pointing the finger at the outsider, and marking them out as one to avoid.

For all the other channels and subscriber based ways of watching television, for all the smoke and mirrors of television programmes being played out endlessly and arguably without diligence and care for the viewers intelligence, when the B.B.C. gets something completely right it normally becomes the best thing to have been seen in the comfort of your armchair all year and in Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell such worthy praise and lofted heights is needed.

It is unusual to find the fifth Doctor’s incarnation adrift in time and space without any of his much loved companions keeping a watchful eye on him, to bounce their anxieties off him or even just to make sure he stays on the right side of compassion. This latest story from Big Finish, The Burning Prince, sees the fifth Doctor, played by Peter Davison, do exactly that and it is a surprisingly frightening prospect.
