It is regarded as bad form to not enjoy and fall in love with an animated film, whether by the masters of the art in Disney or Pixar, or through to the dominant Japanese Studio Ghibli, or even timeless shorts created by the Warner Brothers, it is considered almost reverential to praise the genre from the highest peek when viewing a film in which thousands of hours of work have been painstakingly thought out and applied.

A long line of sequels is always possible when a film comes along with the possibility of an open ended cast and is good enough to carry the weight of excitement, action and sometimes outlandish plot; if it is respectable enough for the makers of James Bond, then it more than good enough for those responsible for The Kingsman.

It feels awkward to pull upon a thread which involves Channing Tatum, an actor who can spellbind an audience as Burt Gurney in Hail, Ceasar!, and show absolute aloofness and brilliant cinematic reserve when required in Foxcatcher, and yet to whom will willingly fall back to alleged type on films such as Magic Mike, Jupiter Ascending and White House Down.

There is nothing like a good Batman film in which to soak up a few hours, Bob Kane’s gift to comic book fandom has had its ups and down, whilst enjoyable in a kitsch, clique ridden way, the 60s television and subsequent film didn’t add much to the mystique of the Dark Knight, whereas Michael Keaton’s and Christian Bale’s interpretation of the man and the myth was completely and beautifully captured by their respective directors.

Not so much a Western, but a murder mystery wrapped in the backdrop of post civil-war America and into which the bleakness of the situation, the desperation of the unfolding events will have many surely comparing Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film, The Hateful Eight in no small measure to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None or any derivation of the name.

There is no doubting the scale of imagination of the Wachowskis. Other, arguably more highly regarded and even phenomenally charged films such as The Matrix trilogy and the exceptional V for Vendetta, will however be remembered with more fondness than the latest film to escape Andy and Lana’s burgeoning net, the visually stunning but poorly delivered Jupiter Ascending.

Making a film out of sport can be as hit or miss as putting a blindfolded 15 year old goalkeeper up against Lional Messi in the World Cup Final in a best of five penalties on the basis that he once saved a penalty in a school yard against the doddery old headmaster. Sometimes promise never, ever matches reality.
