London’s Whitechapel district is never far from a source of inspiration when it comes to gruesome tales, especially when it comes to its down at heel and salubrious past. Things may have improved in the 130 years since Jack the Ripper stalked its alleyways but in the 1880’s the police and the public were under siege by evil and danger that masqueraded itself as decency. The latest B.B.C. television series to look at the way Victorian detectives dealt with the disorder and death of the times is the tremendous Ripper Street.

When it comes to British crime drama, you don’t get much better than basing the story on real events or authentic people and by placing in it in the sometimes squalid and mean streets of late Victorian era Whitchapel, it surely should be a ratings winner. Ripper Street continues the superb start it made in episode one and brings the claustrophobic, disease ridden and above the law contempt even closer to home in the second episode, In My Protection.

The race to be remembered for one’s achievements is one that normally never truly won, it can also be one that causes a degree of self-harm on the protagonist, especially when it drives them to the point of exhaustion, and the possibility of neglecting loved ones and the thoughts of the wider community.

Any form of art should be there to inspire, to look upon something that has been created with disdain is not a natural state of mind, regardless say of the genre, the alluded too message, the perhaps dressed up vanity, or even the down at heel scrawled attempt, it is our soul that we are attempting to save, to express, to live with, and in that event of hoped for salvation and appreciation, we feel hope, we touch promise and dare to dream.

For all television’s preoccupation with fiction that tries to capture the times in which our great grandparents would have lived through, from the dichotomy of the wonders of invention and adventure in the Victorian era and its more fragile, disgusting more sneering side in which the poor were treated with absolute revulsion and through to the period in which an entire generation were almost wiped out in the horror of the First World War; television in the last few years has done its best to glorify in this time and tried to draw parallels with our own sense of time on the planet.
