It may be the thought of Sky Arts encroaching into old familiar B.B.C. territory with their half hour series of plays that forced the channel to follow suit and commission Dominic Savage to write five stand-alone plays that break the boundaries of television drama production. Whatever the reason, Dominic Savage came up with the goods in the first of these to be televised over the next few nights and in Joanne Froggatt, David Tennant and Vicky McClure they hit quality drama gold.

Will Self’s half hour play The Minor Character kicked off a new season of performances for the Sky Arts channel and on the basis of the first offering, home grown drama still has a place for all. Invoking memories of the much loved B.B.C’s Play for the Day, Will Self penned a play that is both enjoyable, slightly psychologically disturbing and one that needs to be watched more than once just to catch every nuance of David Tennant’s sparkling delivery and interaction with the rest of this perfect cast.

Audiences wait an eternity for television drama to make its way back to the Second World War espionage era and then two perfectly good ones come along in a matter of weeks. The second of these diverted away from the thrilling William Boyd penned Restless with the stunning Hayley Atwell as the heroine and focused on the months before the invasion of Poland in Spies of Warsaw with another television favourite, David Tennant, in the lead role.

The Doctor’s lives are being extinguished too fast, the degeneration effect that is afflicting him is seeing the many faces of the time traveller rapidly thrown out of time and out of place. Old friends are unknown, and new ones forged in an order that would threaten the sanity of anyone, but to whom the one who cannot but help the universe when it faces trouble, it is one that could see the end of all that history and what is to come destroyed forever.

And yet it must be said, if the joke is crafted well, you cannot but help smile and laugh, even though you know the setup, even though you know what’s coming, it still raises the corners of the mouth and gives way to that the emotion of being amused, of enjoying the company which told you the series of events which culminate in that often repeated punchline.
