It is the stuff that legends are made out of and then there is Doctor Who. The nights are beginning to draw in and what better way for the B.B.C. to showcase the autumn schedules than by the re-materialising of the blue box, two of the great companions of the modern and any era, the Doctor and an introduction to a new companion that might just be the best since Janet Fielding as the Australian flight attendant Tegan Jovanka.

The hype surrounding the final episode of the mini-like series of the seventh new outing of Doctor Who has had the plethora of fan sites working themselves into frenzy since it was announced that one of the best companions, the red-haired and forthright Amy Pond, was going to leave at some point during the current season. The reason is simple, not every-one leaves the Tardis in good circumstances; sometimes they don’t come back at all.

Passionate irreverence and satire are to be applauded when offered to an audience in the knowing wink and smile that is hoped to produce a smile. It is the acknowledgement that taking life so seriously can be harmful to the soul, and if that satire and cheeky impudence is aimed at yourself, then it makes the experience of the artistic intent, all the greater.

It should never have been in any doubt that there would be a third series of Broadchurch commissioned, such a programme cannot be dismissed so easily with just two series underneath its belt and yet as the Not Guilty verdict came tumbling off the tongue of the Chairperson, there must have been an inkling that the original case was far from over.

The penultimate episode of a long running drama is just as important as the bitter conclusion. The viewer has had the set up in the initial opening episode and stayed the course, but if the penultimate instalment doesn’t leave the viewer hanging on the edge of the chair, shouting in frustration, even if they know that answers are never that easy, then all is lost and time and tide wash away the burgeoning expectation and the final reveal is taken away.
