The trouble with time travel for the novice is that it can lead to the most peculiar syndrome of just aimlessly walking about and staring at things as if they had come from another planet, let alone another period in time.

The Battle Between The Insomniac And The Dawn.

The blinding argumentative glare

of darkness rolls in

at around four in the morning

and it rolls

its tongue, it slavers

and slurs, it begs and it stains

with insult, it disdains and pours

scorn on the eyes, as the narrow focus

of mock slit readiness

is installed

like a sergeant on parade

who first gets a sense of deviant

gratification at the prospect of pissing

down someone’s ear, of making them squirm

for having the audacity of sleeping till four

in the morning when they should

To love history, to love the chronicles of English Literature that delve further back than even that of the great works of art beloved by Geoffrey Chaucer or the stunning Beowulf, one must then surely admire just how the kingdom of England was forged in the fire of heat and war, to the point where even a committed pacifist could take up a sword to defend a hillside or see the Somerset Levels not as a housing estate but as a naturally occurring set of defences.

It is the season to be jolly, to eat, drink and be merry, to frown upon those that find the Christmas spirit more than a little agitating and for the absurdity of walking through a shopping centre anywhere in the country and being bombarded by the dream of capitalism in red and white hats. It is the season in which all good girls and boys get presents that they truly know deep down inside that their parents cannot afford. It is the season in which we have arguably forgotten the truth of it all, that peace is a not a commodity that is stacked upon a shelf with a price tag emblazoned with the legend “Christmas bargain, two for one special”…it is no wonder that more people are turning their backs upon it all.

A Constant Lover.

The trouble with insomnia

is that you get so damn tired of it.

To me though she is a constant lover,

she fills my day and gives more and more

and more and more….ad infinitum.

I can’t miss this dark and brooding mistress

as she never leaves me alone, she caresses

with care and whilst my head feels fevered,

boiling to the touch on some days,

she whispers down my ear,

that it will be alright, she will see

me through the rain, she will be with

It is always in the best intentions that a single flashlight being seen on the horizon, that the silence of the bleakest moment is infused by the sighting of a match being struck, or the opportunity that arises to get bearings from the sudden flash of lightning on the wildest of nights can do for the soul; it is in those intentions to that ask of you to return to some distant safety, that ask you to return to the light.

Whether you look at a map and see the U.K. or the British Isles, what should come across is not space or land, the internal politics or conquests of ages past, but the differences in culture and sophisticated musical refinement should come bounding across. From the tip of Cornwall and the southern beauty of Guernsey as they jut out into the Atlantic Ocean and English Chanel with pride and impunity, up to the outlaying crops of land that have more in common with our Nordic cousins and the streak of fierce musical enjoyment thrust into their soul, there truly is more to this land that what can ever be seen on a map.

Victor Frankenstein, Film Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 7.5/10

Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy, Jessica Brown Findlay, Andrew Scott, Freddie Fox, Daniel Mays, Spencer Wilding, Callum Turner, Louise Brealey, Charles Dance, Alistair Petrie, Mark Gatiss, Guillaume Delaunay.

All stories have a beginning, some are forged in the deep recesses of the imagination and some are taken to added upon, made more user friendly for a modern audience who might conceive that the birth of a famous monster should have more to it than meets the initial eye. A succession of films have alluded to the question, one successfully so, but it falls to the screen play writer Max Landis to ask the question outright, just who really was the monster in the marvellous Mary Shelley novel Frankenstein?

Celluloid And Olivia Newton John.

I fell in love

with celluloid before I could spell it

and perhaps even before I knew

how much a grip it would hold

on my soul.

A cold night in Birmingham,

my cousin and I out with an aunt

decked out against the billowing

droplet air, glacial toes riding

against warm pins and needles

and her stockings catching fire

breath as they rode

up and down

over her knees

and the static sparking life

on the nylon covered seats.
