It takes Two to run a successful public house, it takes two to be in a relationship that can be steady as a rock or toss and weave on the seas and bubbles of the foam filled, short measured bitterness that comes with watering down the spirit and overcharging the customer; it takes Two to pull the beers, listen to the stories and see the world beyond the optical illusion. It takes Two to remember the reason why working together in such an environment is ultimately a thrilling piece of comedy and the heartache that is the flip side of such genuine laughter.

A sharp and touching slice of English life set in a Northern Pub owned by a savagely bickering husband and wife. Two is a series of short vignettes that skilfully combines pathos and humour, with all fourteen characters played by two actors. During the course of the evening assorted customers pass through including a little boy left behind by his father – an event which triggers a movement towards a fragile reconciliation between the pub couple, as their own dark tragedy is revealed.

It takes two to truly make a conversation, to sit and chat without the meaning being lost and the understanding being stilted and diluted, watered down and the froth of life being spluttered upon and half drawn conclusions met.

Meeting up with Jennifer Bea ahead of her performance in the Jim Cartwright play Two, you cannot help but be struck by the fire that dances in the eyes, of the absolute determination to bring a character to life. Even if you have had the honour of knowing Ms. Bea for a while, that fire catches you out and you cannot help but be drawn to it, like a moth serenading a flame, you know that time is short but you revel upon every word.
