The Bad Shepherds, Gig Review. 02 Academy, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

There is a moment when you are listening to The Bad Shepherds, whether it is on a C.D. or more importantly in the realms of the live performance that you realise just how important the music they have taken hold of actually is. What is more significant, is what they have moulded out of precious material and given new form to, the music remains, the lyrics don’t really change at all and yet somehow they have either given fresh impetuous to the song at hand or given a completely new radical meaning to the track.

There are cover versions and then there are real humdingers, songs that have been given such a new lease of life that they buzz with a new purpose that thrills the musical soul. Many musicians and boy bands can recreate the sound of a much loved anthem, the pop classic, the standard bearer of a generation who knew the song inside out and adored it but somehow it gets rehashed by the latest so called boy band and the song somehow loses its power. Then there are The Bad Shepherds and the incredible folk twist they bring to music which illuminates that power and gives it a new meaning.

Adrian Edmondson is one of the most iconic faces on television. As part of the superb Comic Strip Presents…team, Vivyan in the cult anarchic series The Young Ones and in recent years appearing in programmes as diverse as Holby City and Hell’s Kitchen.  He also has a huge musical background and in the last few years has performed with the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, The Idiot Bastard Band and more notably, the exceptional Folk/ Punk crossover group The Bad Shepherds with Troy Dunkley and Andy Dinan.

It might be hard to get past the idea of comedian Adrian Edmondson being on stage with musicians playing folk versions of punk classics but after opening with The Clash’s I Fought The Law they had the near-capacity crowd in the palm of their hands.

Other songs getting the Bad Shepherd’s treatment included The Stranglers’ hit No More Heroes, The Jam’s Down In The Tube Station At Midnight and Talking Heads’ Once In A Lifetime.

Perhaps it is appropriate that The Bad Shepherds are touring at the moment, for nobody would have possibly enjoyed the nod to creativity of The Bad Shepherds to folk up classic punk tracks than Malcolm Mclaren who sadly passed away earlier this month.

In salute to the man behind the Sex Pistols the band opened up an evening of skilful toned down music with the fitting song Anarchy in the U.K. and The Smiths’ lament Panic. There will be those that have never really been fans of The Smiths but to hear this particular song being played by the genius insanity that is Adrian Edmondson would have been a joy to behold.

When The Bad Shepherds released their debut album, Yan Tyan, Tethera, Methera! In 2009 the general public at large were unaware of the band who were about to change the way we think of Punk and Folk music.

Roll forward in time just over a year and the band are about to release the long awaited follow up to that quirky, intelligent and incredibly fun album in the pun driven title By Hook or by Crook.
