It is tempting at times to believe Government rather than Time and fate deal the cruellest hands when it comes to the way the ordinary person is dealt as if they have no right to expect decency or even just a quiet unassuming life, that the conspiracy of action is just that, kick a person when they are down and with that tough love they will raise themselves out of the situation they have been placed in, as if by magic, their lives will be restored, that growth and strength comes from being treated abysmally.

Football may have changed to the point where many who filled the terraces after they came back from the battlefields of Europe, who stood on the side-lines as attendances dropped alarmingly as the spectre and disgrace of hooliganism ravaged the sport would now not recognise how much it has altered and boomed. However, one thing perhaps remains constant, and in amongst the wall to wall coverage, the upmarket cuisine that replaced the half time pies, sugar laden teas and copious amounts of Bovril; the roar of the crowd that declares that The Referee’s A…. (insert term of abuse of choice) has never left the game.

“Be not afraid of greatness”, words to live by and words in which there stands the golden possibility that Ben Elton’s Upstart Crow will gather the same attention bestowed upon the realm of Blackadder, for in the wit and humour of the show stands that greatness, a passion for the bard that never seems to fall out of favour and why should it, for in the greatest of them all lives much to pluck a juicy Christmas tender joint from.

The Boy in the Dress is one of those heart-touching moments of British television that no doubt will split the vast majority of Christmas viewers. It will inevitably also have those that purposefully avoided it have mini rages into their early morning cups of tea and spitting in annoyance at the thought of such a diverse subject being given air time.
