It is easy to see why Spiderman is amongst the favourites of all the super heroes that have come and gone since the much heralded Golden Age of the genre; funny, wisecracking, prone to teenage angst, the fine line between the big picture and the tiniest detail always shown as brightly as possible, a young lad protecting his neighbourhood rather than taking on the world. Since his first appearance in comic book and on screen, through Saturday morning cartoon and posters on the wall, any young person and any adult who remembers the feeling, will always be entranced by Peter Parker and Spiderman.

Captain America: Civil War, Film Review. Picturehouse, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

Cast: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Emily VanCamp, Tom Holland, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, William Hurt, Martin Freeman, Marisa Tomei, John Kani, John Slattery, Hope Davis, Alfre Woodard, Gene Farber, Stan Lee.

The world hangs in a deadly balance, the world’s mightiest heroes are being reined in by their own kind and their friends and divisions and sides are being forged and broken; the world is used to such fun and games, countries routinely flip in their pursuit of self interest and government greed but to do this to those charged with protecting the planet, it all gets very murky indeed.

Timeshift: How to Be Sherlock Holmes, The Many Faces Of A Master Detective. Television Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

Sherlock Holmes, just his very name is enough to bring a smile of satisfaction to the millions of fans of the science of deduction. Whether in the abundance of stories created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, including the classics The Sign of Four, The Red Headed League and the gothic horror The Hound of The Baskervilles or in the many film adaptations staring such luminaries as Basil Rathbone, Roger Moore, Robert Downey Jr. and Peter Cushing.  There have been the very successful early stage production or in the television series’ that has caught the public imagination starring Jeremy Brett or Benedict Cumberbatch, everybody who has ever enjoyed the detective has a point of view on him and the many faces he has worn.

Watching a film adaptation of any Philip K. Dick story is likely to leave you scratching your head, pondering the meaning of existence and wondering if the directors have kept hold of their own sanity whilst working on a man’s work who was undoubtedly brilliant but whose words were riddled with the idea of a man searching for his own personal identity, even more so than any protagonist he wrote about in his novels or short stories.

Iron Man Three, Film Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

Cast: Robert Downey Jr, Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Ben Kingsley, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau, Ty Simpkins, Paul Bettany, Ashley Hamilton, William Sadler, Miguel Ferrer, Shaun Toub, Mark Ruffalo.

Visually the third instalment of Iron Man sums up everything you would expect from the people who have changed the way in which to showcase big budget superhero films. Wonderfully filmed, the senses get rocked and moved beyond experience before and they set out a challenge to D.C. to come up with the goods that would finally see a clean and fair fight between the two superpowers of international comic books. Visually, the film is as near perfect as you can wish for and is perhaps only bettered by the mass ensemble of last year’s The Avengers.
