Perhaps a first for a Liverpool audience, a sight of the strange turned talking point, to be greeted by the physical image of representations of four hot air balloons above the Philharmonic Hall stage, a symbol maybe of the heights that Mike and the Mechanics have strode for, to see beyond the horizon, a depiction feasibly of Phileas Fogg and his earnest wish to prove to the world that the impossible can be achieved with the right attitude and cast iron will.

It is the carrying call of all who wish to be seen as being independent, of being able to go beyond the imprint of Icarus and his less than idealist performance, that we all at some point have to beat a drum to the notion of being able to reach out and touch the stars, that we want to shout out, Let Me Fly. It is human, it is the inspiration that carries us all and yet still there are those that take great pleasure in holding the reigns tight and suffocating the spirit out of those willing to dare.

Mike and the Mechanics have been away a long time. At one time the band was the epitome of good music, thoughtful, creatively intelligent lyrics that would make the heart ache and the soul sing. Now seven years after the last album Rewired, they can officially be thought of being back to their best and amongst the highlights of the AOR scene to come to Liverpool this year.
