Cast: Sophie Turner, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Evan Peters, Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan, Jodi Smit-McPhee, Kota Eberhardt, Andrew Stehlin, Scott Shepherd.

A final offering, one that should have the audience gripped, almost putty like in the hands of the producers, the directors and actors alike, after all an audience will have been waiting for this moment for a period of years, their hopes always on the verge of bursting – then the realisation sets in, the climax that you want is not what the franchise could have been, in that moment the highs and excitement that you once felt, the love and care that you showed, is gone, has departed quicker than an express train hurtling through your local station as you casually ignore the warning about standing close to the yellow line.

It could be deemed our own fault, the height of expectation drawn from the Nordic Noir television and film dramas has been of such good quality, that as an audience we perhaps think that any drama set in the north of Europe is going to reap the same beneficial advantages of story-telling, that the quality bench mark cannot falter. An expectation sadly not realised when it comes to The Snowman.

Perhaps once upon a time it would have been too much for a cinema audience to ask that the phenomenally superb and Box office smash Alien would ever get the treatment it deserved in sequels; to think it could happen in a prequel was beyond even the stretch of imagination of many a die-hard fan and yet lurking in the shadows, skulking with shiny black skin and acid for blood is the 21st Century equivalent of a nightmare made real, the outstanding Alien Covenant.

Not everything has to make sense in the world of cinema, it is the illusion after all many felt happy to fall in love with, however when it comes to making a good film, one that captures the imagination, the best way to engage with the audience is not to offer it something that is so unrealistic it hurts to watch and it is painful to conceive the planning meeting in which it was approved.

Uncanny as it seems but The X-Men are a franchise that keeps giving, not only in their graphic novel form but in the outline and grizzled affair that is cinema. This is certainly true as the first class trilogy comes to its conclusion in the exciting and worthy X-Men: Apocalypse.

There is no doubt that Steve Jobs was magnetic personality, that the brains behind some of the ideas of personal computing of the last 40 years have his own indelible stamp upon them and that whilst being deeply flawed, as all reasonable people are apt to be, Danny Boyle’s biopic of the man behind Apple somehow manages to leave the casual viewer feeling aloof and disconnected from the subject at hand.
