A detective’s team is a family, there may be the lone wolf who solves crimes with unnerving consistency, but they still require back up in today’s modern fight against the criminal underworld, they essentially need collaboration and reinforcement to bring the perpetrator to book, to see justice done; and yet there is the grey area which insists that if a detective has a family of sorts to help in their examinations of the crime, then the criminal themselves relies heavily on those they also have brought into their own fold.

For all the other channels and subscriber based ways of watching television, for all the smoke and mirrors of television programmes being played out endlessly and arguably without diligence and care for the viewers intelligence, when the B.B.C. gets something completely right it normally becomes the best thing to have been seen in the comfort of your armchair all year and in Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell such worthy praise and lofted heights is needed.

When the world turns on a single fateful decision to topple a King, the fall out is never going to be pretty, the lives that become embroiled in the plot, whether they know about it or not, are going to change, perhaps even ruined and the ultimate measure in Trial and Punishment is set, the pawns and the people placed in it all will feel the wrath of the King.

The end game is almost upon the faithful Musketeers. The Queen stands charged with treason and treachery, Aramis is deeply involved in a scandal that could bring civil war to France and Athos has started to see the deceitful Milady De Winter in a different light once more, the combination of all these chemical, potentially nuclear like explosive elements are enough to place the future of the country into unheralded jeopardy on the scale of Agincourt.

It’s hard enough on the soul when we find out what our friends are like when they turn against us, what it does to the fragile nature of inner peace when we find out what are parents are capable of, especially if like Porthos, one of them has been conveniently missing for the whole of your life, is an emotional response that you might not wish upon a sworn enemy.
