To be given the opportunity to study the craft of a genius, that is surely all any writer or observer of life can ever hope to be gifted, and to be involved with one of Britain’s foremost political satirists and writers of modern farce, even in a viewing capacity, must be at the very least, sheer heaven.

The existence of the magician and their sleight of hand proves that we all want to be fooled at some point in our lives. Perhaps it is the willing of the suspension of belief that attracts us, the chance that we might see through the mist and feel the satisfaction of being the only one to have worked out the illusion, whilst at the same time wondering what happened to the child within who was overawed by spectacle as well as exhibition.

Burton And Taylor, Television Review. B.B.C. 4.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

Cast: Dominic West, Helena Bonham-Carter, Lenora Crichlow, William Hope, Michael Jibson, Trevor White, Christopher Cowlin, Lucille Sharp, Isabella Brazier-Jones.

It was a love affair that captured millions of people’s imaginations. The unceasing desire between two people at the end of their long acting powers that both brought them together but also tore them apart, both mentally as well as physically, was captured in all its glory in the latest well produced one-off drama by B.B.C. 4 in Burton and Taylor.

Black Mirror, White Bear. Television Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

Cast: Tuppence Middleton, Lenora Crichlow, Michael Smiley, Ian Bonar, Elisbeth Hopper, Nick Ofield.

The world of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror takes a look at the dystopian future of voyeurism and the gratified spectacle of continued mob justice through the almost incestuous and baying eyes of television.

White Bear is the antidote to any viewer who may have been under the misapprehension that the previous week’s offering was in anyway diluted because of the very nature of love was at its heart. What better way to get rid of any feelings of nagging heartache than by watching a young lady slowly reach breaking point as all around her are filming her every move.

Cast: Martin Shaw, Lee Ingleby, Maggie O’ Neil, Eamonn Walker, Pippa Bennett-Warner, Lenora Crichlow, Craig Conway, Gary Carr, Simon Hubbard, Cliff Lee.

In the last few years Martin Shaw has proved that a good actor cannot be kept off the screen for too long. The 1970’s saw him as part of The Professionals and in recent years he has kept his fans happy by being the star attraction in Judge John Deed and as the man out of place in Inspector George Gently.
