British Folk Horror or the gothic supernatural doesn’t perhaps get the respect it deserves in the 21st Century, few writers will embrace it, and it appears even less people wish to dip their toe into the murky, almost pitch black seas to which the mirroring and observances of the closed community has thrived unabated by the pressures of time, or indeed the interference of the outside world.

There are times when you look at a film and understand the hype that has been attached to it, that the feeling of a completed article is close at hand, and yet in the same recognised thought, you see the issues that others have labelled down and wondered if they even went into the screening with that one purpose of mind, straight forward, non-objective or stereotyped open mindedness.

Some actions undertaken in life require no justification for their existence, and regardless of what you may think of the whole Harry Potter Universe and its ever-growing list of additions and supplements, what cannot be denied is the way in which J.K. Rowling has endeavoured to bring audiences together, either through the volumes of pages, or through the effect of the cinema screen.

Legends come from stories long since handed down and embellished, made uncertain and then allowed to fade into the darkness of our collective memories, such is the fate of us all and without proof, who is to say that you also won’t become a myth.

Every story requires an author, the voice of reason, doubt, uncertainty, humour and charm in which capture every single element possible to make the listener pin back their ears and quietly contemplate what the creator is actually telling them. If every story expects a story teller then Wes Anderson should be the one to be involved at every point of the tale’s conception.

Everybody has their favourite Sherlock Holmes. It’s a question that gets asked frequently alongside, “So, who is your favourite Bond?” Conversations in pubs go on for hours up and down the country as each generation extols the virtue of, to their mind, the best person to portray the great detective Sherlock Holmes. The one with the best flaws, the little defects that make the man’s mind so fascinating. Of course it could depend on what era you grew up in. To a previous generation before my own, you hear the dulcet tones of Basil Rathbone being mooted, like a fine whisky that’s been kept in a special reserve for 40 years and only opened after a long and protracted battle of wits. There can be no escaping his clutches once you open the bottle.
