There was a time when a graphic novel adaption, or a spin off from a much-loved film would be met with the mixture of apathy and delight. Apathy because there was only so much that television could do in terms of making the programme accessible and in keeping with the character’s back story.

You can create great drama out of a crisis, you can get the point across of how vital the emergency services are in an insightful way, and you can also give the audience pleasure in seeing how brave and dedicated people react to moments that are away from the front line, the off duty moments, the private instances in which the guard is allowed to briefly be put down, yet to make a full feature comedy, one that has three great supporting actors to whom the genre is engrained, widely misses the mark of what should pass for idea, the presence of the comedic style.

An assassin is only good as the silence he leaves behind, the job based on the ability to disappear into the shadows like a whisper of a ghost, an unseen hand able to take another’s life without even breaking sweat; an assassin must live in the stillness, be a spectre at a victim’s wake.

American Ultra. Film Review.

Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Topher Grace, Walton Coggins, John Leguizamo, Bill Pullman, Tony Hale, Stuart Greer, Michael Papajohn.

There are films that will come to the cinema, present themselves as being slightly off beat and which despite the overwhelming reasons why you shouldn’t like them, you can’t help but be drawn to their physical being. The same goes with some actors, you are unsure to why they have risen so highly up the scale of Box office requirements but you cannot help but like their performances on screen. When these two states of mind mix and merge, that feeling is intensified to the point where you really are not surprised if the sky turns a shade of purple and a lottery win is on the cards.

Kick Ass 2, Film Review.

Sequels are almost inevitable, especially when the first film outing was seen as something new and exciting to grab the attention of those pleasantly surprised by what they see on the big screen. Sometimes though it may be better to leave the story where it ended, with the credits rolling and the audience giving plaudits. The news that Star Wars is to have yet another follow-on and with no conclusion in sight is one such film franchise, the other unfortunately is perhaps Kick-Ass 2.
