It is only in retrospective that we can see all that was built before we arrived on the scene, that we can fully understand what has been created, and the longer the endeavour, the more fruitful the discovery when we encounter it. No matter the time it takes to sift through the material, the regret you may have for not being part of the journey until perhaps it was too late, all that should be considered is that you have arrived to see the tower alight with wonder and with solemnity of emotion intact.

There are institutions, there are legends and then if you are lucky enough, if you have the fortune and interest of spirit coursing through your veins, then there are those to whom British music owes not just a debt of thanks, but a rather large cheque that can never be cashed or exchanged. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Take That, Bananarama, Atomic Kitten, Kate Bush, without the likes of Tommy Steele, Billy Fury and Joe Brown leading the way from the very start, arguably the British music scene would have looked an awful lot different.

You can find yourself at a Joe Brown gig for any given reason but you will stay for the unrelenting pleasure received from his undaunted smile, his absolute joy at sharing music with you and simply because he is an entertainer, a gentleman of the times who has never been left behind and to whom music is best served naturally and with openness. You may find yourself in the grip of bad times but Joe Brown cannot help but put a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

No matter the music you are into, the genres you find falling into line with during your life time, there is always a surprise or two waiting to catch you out along the way. Even the most ardent heavy metal fan can sometimes for no reason at all find themselves whistling along to a half remembered song from their pre-metal days. The songs of innocence sometimes outweigh the experience the listener builds up in their mental reserve and sometimes something creeps through, takes root and even makes you smile as you imagine the musicians having a blast recording the simple pleasurable notes.

The broad smile at the end of the night said it all, Joe Brown, one of the true great British music legends, had enjoyed his time back on stage in Liverpool and judging by the response and adoration that came his way, it’s fair to say that the audience enjoyed the respected musician’s couple of hours just as much as he did.

Joe Brown has been performing for audiences up and down the country for longer than most, but his infectious enthusiasm for entertaining his loyal army of fans has never seemed to desert him. Arriving on stage with a cheery smile and to much applause from one of favourite cities, Joe proceeded to give the audience everything they had come out for. Good music, a little bit of Cockney banter and a few stories of his career.
