When you have seen the joke before, the punchline becomes inevitable…

And yet it must be said, if the joke is crafted well, you cannot but help smile and laugh, even though you know the setup, even though you know what’s coming, it still raises the corners of the mouth and gives way to that the emotion of being amused, of enjoying the company which told you the series of events which culminate in that often repeated punchline.

We like to think children and teenagers have become more sophisticated and more adapt in understanding how the world works, that in the way they can overcome technology and hold their own in conversation regarding ideas, they, like their adult counterparts, are still as susceptible to falling for the charms of fanaticism of any political persuasion, that the words of rhetoric can just be as much a thrill when spoken with the voice of authority, as the soft coercion holds the beauty of poetry aloft.

Black ’47, Film Review. Picturehouse@F.A.C.T., Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

In the best traditions of the revenge film genre, Black ’47 must surely sit as a truly incredible example of writing, not only in terms of its absorbing, harrowing storyline but in the judgement it passes on the nature of greed and neglect for our neighbours, our souls and what they are worth when we can idly sit by as people die in the streets as the hunger and cold eats away at their resolve and their lives.

There is no honour amongst thieves, however, there is always truth, infallibility and greed and it always makes for a great story to be retold, examined and pursued; regardless of whether it is steeped in fiction, or the absurdity of truth, the heist film is one of intricate plans and betrayal, and it is one in which King of Thieves is a good quality diamond in which to fall in love with.

It is through the eyes of the innocent that we perhaps see beauty and good in the world, that we don’t just tolerate the storms and the fire that surround us but that we embrace it, we seek out the violence not to get a thrill from the fight but to hopefully offer a solution, a kind word spoken can make the difference in a day and in a person’s life.

If we were all as fortunate, as happy in life as the parents of British artist, cartoonist and graphic novelist Raymond Briggs then the world would arguably be a happier place. In a touching, beautiful piece of animation, the celebrated artist’s portrayal of his mum and dad’s life from the first time they met to the day they both passed away was explored, visually described and heartbreakingly detailed with praise, attention and sheer craft in the feature length Ethel and Ernest.

The Legend Of Tarzan. Film Review.

It is arguably one of the most distinctive calls in the history of cinema, a simple cry of masculinity and dominance and yet one that is fuelled by the perversity of European culture making claims on the lives and heritage of Africa in the 19th and 20th Century. Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan is rich in its story telling, if not in the very sentiment of abuse it was trying to dispel in his readers at the time.
