Hayseed Dixie, Gig Review. 02 Academy, Liverpool. (2016).

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

Hayseed Dixie are an example to how tribute bands should be. What’s the point in seeing or hearing a covers group if they sound the same as the original? The gentlemen from Hayseed Dixie give a fantastic yet unusual twist to rock n roll, as distorted guitar solos are replaced by a banjo and acoustic guitars.

Coming to Liverpool on the back of the immensely popular new album, Hair Down To My Grass, there is only one way to describe the banjo loving, Tennessee loyal awe-inspiring sight of Hayseed Dixie and that’s committed, unpretentious brilliance.

If you’re going to cover a song, change it so much to the point of near brilliance and don’t give a flying monkeys if it annoys the purist.

For Hayseed Dixie, and their cousins in arms The Bad Shepherds, taking a classic Rock song and giving it new life via the injection of new blood feels like such an honest and affirming thing to do, that you do wonder why some young musicians with boundless energy and creative juices flowing overtime don’t do the same rather than having their beautiful ability shrouded by the constraints placed upon them by sticking to rigidity laid down before them.

There are two bands on the circuit right now that have changed the idea of playing rock/metal and punk tunes, turning them upside down and inverting them to the point that the meaning of the songs has changed. The first is The Bad Shepherds with their folk versions of classic punk tunes; the second is America’s Blue Grass sensations Hayseed Dixie.

Mixing their distinctive style with tracks that have been loved by the Metal/Rock community for the best part of 35 years has led the guys to become much loved by their legions of fans and a guaranteed enjoyable night out.
