The Mandalorian and Andor proved it, and Dave Filoni’s Ahsoka has doubled down with force on the insistence, but Star Wars as an entity no longer requires the presence of Luke Skywalker, General Leia Organa, or even Han Solo in starring roles to carry the much loved and admired franchise forward.

It is a desired mirror held up to our uncertain, even dangerous, times that we undoubtedly look to stories and myths in which to console us, to see us through the damage done and the spectres and evils that haunt our land. We look back through time to draw parallels, to join up the dots of mayhem and division, and come to the conclusion that it all comes down to one thing, we have become infatuated with stuff, rather than the joy of simply being free.

It was always inevitable, always going to happen at some point, perhaps in a galaxy not too far away but someone was always going to produce a prequel to the prequels and do it after all the sequels had been set near enough in Cordite. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the tale that all fans of the space saga has fully deserved, the one big hole that needed not just filling, but doing so with respect, with elegance and style and perhaps even with the odd nod to the Universe at large.
