A television detective must have a flaw to convey a sense of security with the viewer, and in a period when flaws are accurately shown as a different kind of strength, the connection between viewer and the solving of a complex crime has perhaps never been keener.

The detective with a unique quirk is nothing new to the overwhelming amount of television programmes dedicated to the genre; even those who assist the police have their own routines and ways which can, if written with care, make them stand out in such a way that the public takes to them, and watch them become, if not national treasures, then at least interesting enough to warrant their inclusion in the television watchers weekly habitual intake.

There is perhaps a question of whether age diminishes the achievements that have been made in youth or whether to be seen as fallible, to be seen as mortal actually enhances the great strides made when life was to be moulded, when Time was not feared and the weakness that must come to us all as frailty and memory forsake the owner.

Vicious, Television Review. I.T.V.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

Cast: Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, Frances de la Tour, Iwan Rheon, Marcia Warren, Philip Voss.

The new I.T.V. comedy Vicious has two very big surprises attached to it. The first is that it must have been a hell of meeting when they announced that two of the biggest names of British theatre were to be cast in the lead roles and secondly that it was actually enjoyable. I.T.V. may be on top when it comes to excellent drama, the channel really having pulled out all the stops in its determination to be considered to be the natural home of the thriller and dramatic story line but its comedy has not been that well received.
