The Mandalorian and Andor proved it, and Dave Filoni’s Ahsoka has doubled down with force on the insistence, but Star Wars as an entity no longer requires the presence of Luke Skywalker, General Leia Organa, or even Han Solo in starring roles to carry the much loved and admired franchise forward.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

Cast: David Tennant, Michelle Gomez, Neve McIntosh, Dan Starkey, Catrin Stewart, Hannah Genesius, Stephen Noonan, Tim Treloar.

The Doctor’s lives are being extinguished too fast, the degeneration effect that is afflicting him is seeing the many faces of the time traveller rapidly thrown out of time and out of place. Old friends are unknown, and new ones forged in an order that would threaten the sanity of anyone, but to whom the one who cannot but help the universe when it faces trouble, it is one that could see the end of all that history and what is to come destroyed forever.

When you have seen the joke before, the punchline becomes inevitable…

And yet it must be said, if the joke is crafted well, you cannot but help smile and laugh, even though you know the setup, even though you know what’s coming, it still raises the corners of the mouth and gives way to that the emotion of being amused, of enjoying the company which told you the series of events which culminate in that often repeated punchline.

H G Wells and Jules Verne, two men for whom readers can bestow the title of the Godfather of Science Fiction, perhaps can arguably claim from the beyond that their work has not had the best of treatments when it comes to large screen or television adaptations. It is almost as if the text is too outlandish, too peculiar to capture the essence of their finest works, leaving the fan to console themselves with the imagination and the novels at their disposal.

A species, a race, dedicated only to the extermination of all others in the universe is terrifying enough a prospect to deal with, add in the one crucial factor that makes it chilling, that recalls all the despotic, the evil, the cruelty and obnoxious malevolence that can only be found in the megalomania and psychopathic behaviour of a mind filled with absolute hatred, and you are either face to face with the foul and wicked presence of the worst of humanity, or you have been captured by the Daleks, and their foul, depraved creator, Davros.

Time has a habit of bringing us back to that place we think we have left behind forever.

The Doctor, especially in his tenth incarnation, has lived through the emotional turmoil of losing companions, his people, and at times, his own perspective on the Universe; pushed through time and sometimes not able to withstand the pressure facing him from all sides. He might win, he might save the day, but it feels like a loss, a devastating failure in which his actions to save Gallifrey in a previous life still echo around him like marbles in a tin can.

To be inspired in difficult and trying times is to accept that the human condition requires stimulating, craves arousal of spirit, and whilst art has undoubtedly suffered without mercy during 2020, there is something of the eternal machine of hope that grinds on, that beats in the heart of every artist of every persuasion, that the show, in whatever format, must go on.
