There will always be an audience for the mystery of the fairy-tale, the warning that the younger crowd will be unaware of that is being played out for them, the notice of the cautionary advice and fear that comes from being the parent to the child caught spellbound in myriad of colour, magic and spectacle, especially when it is delivered with the effect of outlandish beauty attached to it and the dream-like quality to which foretells of unrepentant merchandising galloping along beside it like a knight vanquishing the dragon or troll in pursuit of their own pile of gold.

The land of cliche is under constant threat of never being allowed to die in peace, to be remembered for the small annoyances, for the large discomfort felt, a hero must be seen to stand tall and have the attention of the audience, but they must be seen as being more than a two dimensional caricature which sends a signal to the audience, that the land of cliche is being primed and prepped once more for boarding.

In amongst the seemingly endless repeats, festive cheer, tear-jerkers and the inane, sometimes a made for television film comes along in the run up to Christmas Day that is a sparkling jewel, a reason why television actually deserves its place in the lives of all, a piece of quality so rare that it has been worth being forced to listen to other people’s conversations about the latest celebrity gossip and ghoulish-like fascination of the box in the corner.

It is the stuff that legends are made out of and then there is Doctor Who. The nights are beginning to draw in and what better way for the B.B.C. to showcase the autumn schedules than by the re-materialising of the blue box, two of the great companions of the modern and any era, the Doctor and an introduction to a new companion that might just be the best since Janet Fielding as the Australian flight attendant Tegan Jovanka.
